Character Variations for Oboe (1985)

For solo oboe, unaccompanied; premiered by Disa English on Monday, December 2, 1985 at First & Second Church, Boston, Massachusetts as part of an Underground Composers concert; the piece is dedicated to Disa English.

Character Variations for Oboe, as the name suggests, explores recurring musical material that varies throughout the piece.  The work develops three separate musical "characters", juxtaposing each character's musical material in turn throughout different registers of the oboe.  Each variation creates a new opportunity for the performer to explore a range of  color, timbre, and dynamic possibilities.
